CHIPS Co-working Space Renovation
An existing steel-framed office building in Cape Town’s East City was reimagined as a contemporary co-working environment, transforming a previously anonymous commercial structure into a distinct workplace and urban address. The intervention works within the constraints of the existing structural frame and limited floor-to-ceiling heights, requiring a precise and economical architectural strategy. Rather than concealing these constraints, the design embraces the building’s industrial character—exposing structure and services while introducing light finishes to enhance spatial clarity and maximise the perception of height and openness.
The exterior was reconfigured to establish a stronger identity for the CHIPS co-working brand. A simplified façade composition, new signage and landscape elements create a clear street presence while reinforcing the building’s robust industrial expression. Internally, the programme was reorganised to support a flexible working environment, with rentable desk spaces complemented by shared amenities including meeting rooms, kitchen facilities and informal breakout areas.
The interior architecture introduces a warmer, more domestic atmosphere within the industrial shell. Warm timber surfaces, planted workspaces and playful accents create a relaxed working atmosphere, while a strong use of green throughout the project reflects the client’s personality and helps unify the various shared spaces. The result is a flexible workplace that accommodates a range of working modes while establishing a clear architectural character within the constraints of the existing building.
